Treatment

Our video will be a music video thats fully animated from start to finish.

The target audience of the production would be people into the metal scene between the ages of 16 – 24. Our video is to reach out to our target audience

Album cover research

Brand New - The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me

This band can be considered to fit in to quiet a few genres and since we came up with the idea to use them in the video I decided to include them in the album cover research.

This album cover is quite different from what you would expect from an album cover to begin with. Not having the bands name or title anywhere on the front which can be considered to be strange as it does not promote the band at all.

Taking the fact they don't have any writing on the front of the album its not rare for this band to do so and they usually have different album covers with this one being no different. The cover it self sees a young girl either sneaking up or hiding from two men dressed in masks which at first offers quite a halloween sense to it.

Wanting to know more I decided to research to the cover and found this on wikipedia.

"The album cover is a picture titled "Untitled #44" from Nicholas Prior's "Age of Man" collection which the band saw at an art show and later used. Unusually, the outside of the cardboard case contains no song listings, and doesn't contain the name of the album or the band name anywhere but on the spine. The record company instead placed stickers on the plastic wrapping to indicate the name of the album and band, and on the UK version to indicate that it had the bonus track."

This album cover while is stylish can mislead the audience as it offers no direction to who the band can be without looking at the spin so I will have to include the band name etc on mine when I decide to start working on the design

Design ideas
  • Use Pauls drawings as the front cover
  • Have the band name on the cover with album title
  • Use Photoshop to design the cover etc

Poster research

Part of the task I will have to research in to poster design because I will have to design a poster of my own that will promote my music video to the target audience.

This first example of poster research is this advert I found in an NME. The over all design of the advert is pretty basic since it only has the album cover with the name but on the right side they have included a quick summery of album reviews and a score which is trying to push album sales. This is a good idea which I am looking to include when I come to developing the music advert for the album.

The album cover itself is also very basic which is probably to suit the style of music that the band plays. I will also have to take this in to consideration due to different genres of bands having a different style of adverts to fit there audience.

Brand New Noro Song Sample

We used this song in our presentation which we are currently not sure if we will include in the final piece because my mate Paul is thinking about remixing tracks giving a better consistency through out the video

Presentation feedback

This is the feedback from the sheets we handed out after giving our pitch to the class on an animation video. If you click on the images you will be able to see what other people in the class thought to our idea of an animation. I picked out the best ones and uploaded them.

These feekback sheets gave us ideas on the story itself like how it could be improved. The initial story was to have the character drink something at night and him being thrown in to another world while feedback from other users has led us to believe that maybe the character walking through a forest would be a better approach.

Also we are thinking about how it would be possible to do the animation. Either just having it a straight animation or having the animations flickering like a sort of book which is different and can also look more effective to the style we are actually after. We would like to thank the people that gave us feekback for this.

Presentation

This is our presentation that we had to do infront of the class to get feedback from our pitch.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard concept that Paul drew to show how the animation would start and finish. Due this being just a proof of concept to start with its subjected to change during the general deveolpment of the video.

We are currently working on a more professional style of the storyboard in more detail to upload at a later date.

The character concepts that we have come up with are shown below. Currenty they are concept art but we are aiming to have these in the finished product

Salad Fingers animation

Salad Fingers animation

This is a really good example on how to do a successful animation. While not being a music video it’s the main animation that we are looking at because we are hoping to execute something similar to this style of animation. Salad Fingers is considered very successful as it attracts millions of watches to see episodes of the popular animation.

The animation itself is pretty simple with only basic movements but is still effective to a degree it keeps the viewer interested.

Since we are doing a music video the story line does not interest us when we are looking at the video but from what I saw while watching the video the story is mostly random.

Project Ideas

This is the idea sheet our group came up with for the start of the project. The initial ideas we came up with were both music videos because we thought it would be the best possible way to demonstrate something we are both familiar with.

The issues we came up with though for both are the fact they both would require a group of people to make the video effective and not boring. Due to our research we came up with a sort of party is the most generic style of music videos out there. This is because they are aimed at teens and go towards the target audience of a band playing over a party.

When we come to show our presentation we will most likely only pitch one idea because looking at the idea sheet we wont be able to actually do the ones we came up with due to limitations like no instruments, not enough people etc

We are currently looking in to ways on how this can be worked around and still offer a stylish look in to the music video. I’m researching in to animation and to see how we can benefit from using it.
