Movie music video

This is an example of a 2003 film being cut in to parts for a music video. This is was most likely put together by getting an established band and creating a music video to promote the film. Clearly aiming for the teenage audience because of the connotations and generic elements of having teenagers and stakeboarding. This is giving off a kind of rebellious theme for skateboarding in general.

At this time its currently not known if we will be aiming for something kind of like shots of a band playing with a type of party happening which could include skateboarding or actually having the video done with animation.

Music video with animation

This video is an interesting one because it focuses on the band playing in a dark room while having simple animation effects shown. The main example is on the singers mouth which looks like fangs of a beast. This could easily be achieved if I would want to add this to my a video.

Animation Poll

Due to our decision of recently thinking about doing an animated video we would like your help in deciding if this is the right idea for us. I have put a poll at the top right and please vote if you think its a good idea and could work!

Deciding on recording

In my project this year I will have to record a 5 minute video of either a short film, documentary or a music video. I'm contemplating choosing a music video because I believe it would suit me the best in executing it well. Why this choice is not final for the project I have decided to go looking through music videos which appeal for the teenagers and actually expand the song choice.

First Video

Blink-182

The video Feeling This is one of my favorite music videos because I think it really captures the feel of the song which already had a Summer sense. The video is narrative because it has a story about a boy and a girl while also the band is playing live on a stage. This is a good example how to make a good music video that expands the feel of the song.

Second Video

Hit The Lights

The second video is pretty generic for this kind of music it shows the band playing at a house party while like the first one having a narrative story about a boy and a girl taking place at the same time. The videos target audience is clearly aimed at teenagers because of the fact its a large house party with booze, dancing, big crowds of people etc.

Documentary

Attenborough: Flat Lizard colourful displays & fly catching - BBC wildlife

This documentary is an hour long narrated documentary but for this section I will only be looking at a 4 min section of the documentary. The use of a narrator behind the camera to anchor (Barthes Theory Of Anchorage) and link presentation together. They are the
guarantors of authority and are chosen on their personal voice qualities that are likely to appeal to the target audience. The start of this segment shows a long shot of a waterfall followed quickly by a fast frame shot to a real close up even showing detail drops water. The narrator who is David Attenborough starts talking within this shot. This next scene switches to an establishing shot of the canyon following a change of the day and night cycle. This gives a breath taking sense because of the shear size of the canyon for the viewer. This is followed by some dramatic calm music to follow the narration which adds a sort of feeling on the watcher where they can tell its early morning.

The first shot of a reptile is a close up show of the lizard coming out from under a rock. The shot is then pulled up to a bigger scale of lizards following out of the rock. The sense and feel of the documentary is meant to have the effect on the user that he/she is actually watching the daily routine of what the reptiles do with their live and the detail of the close shots gives the user a better approach on how extraordinary they actually are.

Finally in the next shot we see David actually appearing on camera for a short space of time carrying on the narration. This is changes the viewer’s aspects from just hearing a voice over clips to him actually appearing on the screen.
All of the shots are close up rather than having long shots which only take place during scene changes in the documentary. The reason for this is so the user can get a detail impression of the lizards which is what the documentary was made for. One interesting note is how background sounds are pretty much none existent only the voice from David can be heard during the segment.

Interesting in the format of the video chosen to include the narrator to appear in the video only lasts a short time. This was probably intended for the viewer to get a stronger sense of direction the documentary was going for which is to make it seem like the viewer is there witnessing the changes in reptile life.

The video is aimed to be easy watching for the watcher and I personally think the BBC have captured this aspect well. With not having any background sounds and a narrator throughout I think they executed the documentary well.

Music Video

The start of the video shows the bands record label going towards the screen in the style of a feature film. The scene shows the lead singer stepping out of a limo dressed as though attending a film premiere with the band member looking round and camera flashes can be seen. This is trying to show that the band member is famous and that people have been awaiting his arrival. This start is slightly unusual for the band because it shows a more formal side.

The next screen switches back to the style seen on the first screen with the words “All Time Low in Poppin” which is the bands single. During this people can be heard chanting the band’s name over and over before finally cutting in to the band member walking across the carpet in a style which shows he knows he’s famous.

Again this picture while not clear from the youtube quality shows flashes and the style of clothing which already gives the watcher a basic impression.

Finally in the next scene the music cuts in to the letters “ATL” and shows a camera pulling closer towards the large letters. And quickly goes to the band playing their instruments and miming to the lyrics in synch with the song. The band members are dressed in their normal clothes and are wearing designs from their sponsor “Glamour Kills” and they have their hair styled in the form that instantly connotes that they are a band that is with the current scene of Pop-Punk style music. With the band wearing the clothing line which even has one of members Jack owning a part of it, this gives an instant form of advertisement.

The scene switches from the band playing to the lead singer walking through a crowd of women. This quickly changes the thought from the start which gave off a film feature impression. The scenes show more of a party. The lyrics quickly come in to play with the style of the party video. Close up shots of the lead singer playing then changing fast to him walking through the crowd of women and interacting with other band members which are all dressed in a similar style. It comes apparent that the video is more in a comedy style from the start of the video.

Close up shot to catch the expression on the singers face. (Note not the best picture because of youtube quality

An interesting note shows that the lead singer is not miming the lyrics when he’s walking through the party only when he’s playing on the sort of stage. This gave me the impression that the band is not playing at the same time which sometimes other videos do and that they are like completely different times. The band has always been in a style of partying, drinking and having loads of women and this video portrays this very well and gives the audience segments of the stereotypes in the video. These can easy appeal to both the male and female target audience.

The lighting in this video is bright and gives the style of Pop-punk music which is a colorful scene which is kind of in the style of the clothing reflecting of it.

Most of the next scene of the video shows the camera underneath the camera the lead singer Alex walking through the crowd and still interacting with other members who are all in different sections of the party. One of them even being a in tub with a group of people behind him showing that the party is all surrounding them. The next scene switches to the guitarist Jack who is surrounded by women who are all interacting with him. This gives a further audience impression that the band are the hightlight of the party.

Showing the different style of key lighting mainly on the two band members. This shows them interacting with each other as they pass through the party. The camera is following Alex from the front as he passes through

The camera keeps changing from the band playing to them at the party but now the lead singer is now miming the lyrics of the song in both sections. The next scene switches to the band in sport like gear doing a dance while people are dancing around them. The people that are around them aren’t really taking notice of the band who are dancing.

Finally in the next scene Jack flirts with a woman and gets slapped across the face. The scene now shows the band that they are not just famous celebrities as the video was trying to make out to be and are in fact a famous band that likes to have fun rather than be stuck up as a lot of celebrities are portrayed these days. The band at the end is shown getting thrown out of the club. This video style fits the band as stereotypical Pop-Punk band as it was aiming to be from the start.
